Inspired by Wine Country

Northern California’s Wine Country is a captivating composition of rustic charm and laidback luxury. It’s warm, relaxed and effortlessly elegant. Yet the region also holds a distinct character of resilience and ruggedness. From the Giant Sequoias and Coastal Redwoods armored with thick, tannin-rich bark, to the raw mountain landscape that drops dramatically into the Pacific, beauty and grit emerge in equal measure.

Even elements seemingly delicate like the region’s renowned vineyards carry an inherent spirit of strength. The tender fruit of the vine instinctually adapts as it is presented with challenge and change. Flavanols regulate the grape skin’s density providing protection against the scorching sun. The powdery “bloom” that often covers the fruit creates a barrier to environmental threats. Throughout this innate transformation, each conflux holds influence on the grape’s inevitable outcome. A moment of stress can create distinct character within the flavor, and a time of scarcity can bring a unique depth to the wine.

This resilience is also inherent within the region’s native materials, creating an alluring design style. Oak, cedar, granite, lime plaster, and basalt stone form an enduring palette that is both inviting and sophisticated. Combined with modern accents of metal, concrete, and reclaimed wood, the spectrum embodies an unyielding beauty that aptly represents California’s Wine Country.

As you envision the interior design of your home, we invite you to raise a glass to the characteristics that shape the style and ambience of Wine Country.

Minimalistic Form, Organic Texture

Elements like woodgrain, lime plaster, stone, and grass cloth add distinction within the Wine Country aesthetic. The clean lines of minimalistic design add structure to these earthly textures and patterns allowing them to be layered in abundance. A balance of open space and neutral colors keep the overall design modern, sophisticated, and intentional.

Cool Palette with Natural Warmth

Northern California is known for its stark microclimates shaped by the region’s iconic golden sun and cool ocean breezes. This atmospheric context can be displayed within the home’s design by combining cool and warm tones. To create harmony, choose one color family as the primary foundation. Then layer in complementary shades in contrasting colors. It is important to evaluate how the color placement itself will impact the flow and depth of the room. For example, cool colors can often make a space feel larger while warmer shades can be used to draw attention to focal areas or details.

Designer, Christy Bowen from The Cabinetry Studio by Twelve Stones, beautifully combined Matte French Biscuit and Alpine White on Wood-Mode Pescara doors to create warmth within the neutral color palette of this Austin, Texas home.

Reclaimed and Refined

Reclaimed materials and vintage accents add depth and story – even within new spaces. While some wholeheartedly embrace an eclectic aesthetic, this sense of assortment can also be achieved through the curation of materials. Reclaimed woods, refurbished architectural elements, and vintage fixtures create a distinct narrative while remaining polished and contemporary.

Wood-Mode Murray Hill Recessed Inset doors and an ample use of marble establish a timeless sense of refinement in this kitchen by Evolo Design. Accents of plain sawn white oak create an inviting and approachable feeling.

Finding Inspiration

Whether conjured through travel, residence, or simply by visualization, the idea of place has a unique way of inspiring us. These characteristics are often formed by the physical identities and landscapes inherent to a region. However, our emotional connection to these special places is developed from the way each locale makes us feel.

As you continue your interior design journey, take a moment to pause and envision the way you hope to feel within your home. It’s this essence that our team of designers build upon as they bring your vision to reality.
